Geography/ Topography
Ethiopia is the 10th largest country in Africa and has an area of 1.112,000 square kilometers, about 60 percent of - which is arable, with 15 percent presently cultivated. This mixture of cultures and peoples has resulted in the unique languages and customs still found today. There are over 80 ethnic groups in Ethiopia. LanguageAmharic with its unique alphabet is the official and primary language followed by Tigrigna and Oromigna, English, Italian and Arabic are widely spoken. CurrencyThe Ethiopian currency is birr, which floats in value, however is presently about 8.146 to one U.S. dollar. Calendar and TimeEthiopia follows the Julian calendar, which consists of 12 months of 30 days each and a 13th month of 5 or 6 days and is 7 years and 8 months behind the Gregorian calendar.
